1930: Rediscovering a Lost Art

The clicking keys of a typewriter. The snap of a mechanical camera shutter. The roar of a massive radial airplane engine. The bold lines and ambitions of a era past.

We are fond of old beautiful things. The way they look. The way they work. The noises; the smells; the feel and motion. We love that some of these things we own are nearly 100 years old and still work very much the way they did when they were first made. They tell a story of several generations of people who have been custodians of these well-built machines before us and will help yet others write their own story long after us.

The nineteen-thirties inspire us, by the spirit of creation, exploration, and the high achievement embodied in the art, architecture, design, and products of the era. Art Deco, Streamline Moderne, and Bauhaus were all part of this time, and are all major influences on Muyshondt design and art.

We have wanted to create a finish that was emblematic of this era and this feeling. Something classic that would help tell the story of Muyshondt, of our products, and of their owners. A look that would be unique, iconic, and instantly recognizable.

Without further ado, we're pleased to share with you our new finish 1930, as featured exclusively on our Flieger Electric Torch.

Like a well-used camera that tells the story of the photographer's thousands of frames, or the gold-rimmed glass keys of a typewriter being a showcase of countless letters written, 1930 is a finish designed to tell your story.

It is the resurrection of a lost art - a rediscovery several years in the making in finishing metals the old way. An analog finish, 1930 was specially designed to age gracefully with time.

To create it, each part of the Electric Torch is carefully cleaned, masked, and prepared for finishing. The 1930 finish is then painstakingly applied by hand in multiple parts over the course of several days, resulting in a smooth, elegant black finish. Treat it gently, and it will age gently. Use it hard, and like the creases, scratches, and colors in a pair of fine leather footwear, the finish will show that, too.

As with all Muyshondt products, with 1930 we took the long way around.

Use it for life’s adventures: from the ordinary to the extraordinary, wherever you find dark. Appreciate every mark, every scratch, every reveal of golden bronze, and allow it to become a part of your own story through the years.

But most importantly, take the time. Go out. See the world with your own eyes. Find your piece of undiscovered country, your parts unknown. Whether set under the neon glow of an urban jungle or beneath the moon and stars of a stretch of inky black sky, the story of a life well-lived is written with the people and in the tools of the journey.

See you out there.
